A celebration of soil, soul and community

On Saturday 19 September, more than 500 people came together across Meanwhile Gardens to celebrate 50 years of a place shaped by community, creativity and care. The day brought together generations of local residents, families, volunteers, friends and partners through music, archive, conversation and activity across the Gardens. On the Festival Site, a live concert produced with the Portobello Film Festival brought performance back into a space with its own long history of grassroots culture and community gathering.

Inside the Factory Building, the Meanwhile Archive Group presented an exhibition drawing on photographs, documents and memories from the Gardens' history. Developed through the group's work with Delia, North Kensington Social Justice Archivist, the exhibition traces the story of a landscape transformed and cared for by local people over decades. The wider exhibition programme has since welcomed more than 200 visitors.

The celebration was as much about looking forward as looking back: a reminder that Meanwhile has always been made through participation, and that its next chapter will continue to be shaped by the people who use, care for and love the Gardens.
